Actually I've been making dolls for over 20 years now. I made my first doll in Home Ec class, a caricature cloth doll of one of my favorite rock singers. I went from there to making ceramic replicas of antique china head dolls. I also made the soft sculpt cabbage patch type dolls for my nieces and younger cousins.
Then, in 1994, I went to making porcelain antique doll replicas. I love the Bru and Steiner French dolls from the 1800's. I gave porcelain doll making classes in my home for about 2 years until it got to be too much work with my youngest son who was a toddler and into everything. I discovered Ebay, and being a Barbie lover I stumbled onto the OOAK listings, and the idea of combining my doll art with my love for horror movies and Halloween art. I made my first OOAK vampire in May of 1998. She was a doll that I paid 2 dollars for at a yard sale. After customizing her, she sold for $149.00 and my gothic doll art business was launched! I have four doll art websites full of OOAK dolls and doll restoration work. I collect all kinds of dolls, actually I am a doll fanatic! One of our favorite things to do here in Texas is to attend the antique doll and toy shows where we rummage through boxes of old dolls and doll clothes, my favorites are Furga Alta Moda dolls, Crissy dolls and any kind of pretty fashion doll. I get great joy out of doing restoration work on vintage mod play dolls. I love Barbie dolls and have a few from my childhood! But these days I prefer to buy new Barbies for my collection. I also collect Takara Jenny and Momoko dolls. Although I make gothic themed dolls, I do not have very many in my collection. I do have some fabulous gothic dolls that I have gotten from other doll artists. One thing I like about doing OOAK dolls is being able to represent a certain type of character that you might not find just anywhere! Also being able to transform a doll from one look into something completely different. I put a piece of my heart in each of my dolls. But I must say the best thing about being a doll artist is when someone receives one of my dolls and I get a message from them telling me how happy they are with their new doll! When it comes to picking a base doll, I really have to say I enjoy just about all of the ones out there these days! It is the challenge of attempting to get a certain look and if I achieve it, well I canšt wait to get my hands on another doll no matter who she or he might be. Just this past month I worked on Gene, Tyler, Trent, Mei Li, Blaine, lots of Barbie, Volks girl dolls, Volks guy dolls, a ceramic cat doll, and I made a primitive cloth cat doll for myself for Halloween. My training as an artist consists of commercial design, porcelain doll making, training in acrylic and oil painting, fashion design, pattern making and cosmetology. I love to get emails from collectors and other artists and cherish all the friends I've made on the internet! |
