This is the 1971 Sears Gift Set, P.J. Fashion and Motion.
Perfectly Plaid is a Sears Gift Set from 1970.
This beautiful redhead Twist and Turn may have originated from the Beautiful Blues Gift Set.
Has anyone heard of a matching Autumn Haze hat for the Sears Mink? This was found in a case with a lot of vintage Barbie clothing, all Mattel-made...
Throughout the 1960's and into the early 1970's, Sears, Penney's, and Wards had their own exclusive gift sets.
In the Barbie Bazaar July/ August 1996 issue, the five types of gift sets are listed. Using those as a basis, I have compiled a list
of the exclusive dolls and outfits, along with information about them. I have highlighted the gift sets I have pieces of.
TYPE ONE: REGULAR LINE DOLLS/OUTFITS IN SPECIAL PACKAGING
In these sets, the rare part is the box and liner.
Pep Rally Gift Set (1964) - This included no dolls, outfits only. The outfits were: Drum Majorette, Drum Major, and Cheerleader.
Barbie Mix N' Match Set (1963) - a bubblecut Barbie with various pak pieces.
Skipper Party Time Set (1964) - a straight leg Skipper with Dress Coat and Silk N' Fancy.
TYPE TWO: REGULAR LINE DOLLS/OUTFITS WITH EXCLUSIVE ACCESSORIES
In these sets the exclusive accessories are the rarest pieces, with the dolls and outfits being much more common.
Wedding Party Gift Set (1964) - this included a straight leg Midge wearing Orange Blossom, a straight leg Ken wearing Tuxedo, a bubblecut Barbie wearing Bride's Dream, and a straight leg Skipper wearing Flower Girl.
The exclusive piece was a tiny yellow pillow with a small ring sewn on top.
Skipper On Wheels Set (1965) Sears - outfits and accessories only; parts of Day At The Fair and Funtime.
The rare pieces were a red scooter marked 'Skipper' on the side and red roller skates.
TYPE THREE: COLOR VARIATIONS OF REGULAR LINE OUTFITS
These outfits were the same as regular line outfits except they were a different color.
Barbie Hostess Gift Set (1965) - outfits and accessories only. The two outfits were Invitation to Tea in red instead of pink with a gold belt instead of silver, and Barbie
Learns To Cook in white, red blue, and green instead of white, pink and orange.
The exclusive accessories were two candlesticks, a silver plastic serving tray, and a blue plastic flower centerpiece.
Fabulous Formal Set (1969) Sears - in this set there was a Talking barbie and a Talking Ken. The outfits were a yellow
variation of Romantic Ruffles with yellow puff earrings and a yellow variation of Guruvy Formal.
Twinkle Town Set (1969) Sears - a side glancing Standard Barbie with the regular version of the outfit Movie Groovie.
The color variation was the Standard Barbie's two piece swimsuit, which was blue instead of pink with flower accent on the bottom.
TYPE FOUR: REGULAR LINE DOLLS WITH EXCLUSIVE OUTFITS AND/OR ACCESSORIES
In these sets, the rare pieces are the exclusive outfits and/or accessories. These and the #5 type are my absolute favorite kind of gift sets!
Skooter Cut N' Button Set (1965) Sears - a straight leg Skooter with three exclusive cut N' Button costumes, which were similar in design to
the Barbie Sew Free outfits available at the same time. The outfits were a red coat, a blue knee length dress, and a pink nightgown with matching hat.
Braniff Gift Set (1967) Wards- This was made by Marx not Mattel, but many Barbie collectors own or desire it, so it is included here.
Included was a fake bubblecut and four wild airline stewardess outfits. A captain outfit for Ken was also available. I believe that the outfits were also available separately.
Color Magic Fashion Designer Set (1966) Sears - outfits/accessories only. Four costumes and color-changing accessories.
Pink Premiere Set (1969) Penney's - a 1968 Talking Barbie with side ponytail with a pink satin dress with white tiers, a pink satin coat with gold lapel,
a pink purse, pink pantyhose, gold gloves (which are more common because they were also available in a pak), and pink shoes. The pink satin purse was available in an accessories pak separately, so it is easier to find than the rest of the outfit.
Golden Groove Set (1969) Sears - a 1968 side ponytail Talking Barbie with a
pink jacket made out of the same material as the Velvet Venture dress with brown fur trim, matching skirt, and gold lame' thigh high boots.
Stacey Nite Lightning Gift Set (1969) Sears - a short haired TNT Stacey with a pink satin dress with a sparkly blue, purple, and pink bottom, blue/purple satin jacket, and blue soft bow shoes.
Barbie Beautiful Blues Set (1967) Sears - a Twist and Turn Barbie with long, straight hair which came with a
blue sparkly dress with white bow bodice accent, and a matching blue satin jacket with fur trim. My friend Denise and I have a theory about this one:
We believe that all redhead TNTs come from this gift set! Some people claim that redhead Twist and Turns are the result of oxidation, but
I don't know if I believe that. I have light and dark brown TNTs that I've owned for six years or more who haven't turned one shade at all towards redhead.
Not just that, but I've lived in various states and climates during this time period. I've had dolls fade, but no hair turned to red.
Also, I've seen this giftset more than once NRFB with a redhead in it. And Denise found one with this giftset.
If you still believe in oxidation, check out page 7 of the 'Barbie's World: Bright Swinging Now' booklet which came with dolls, copyright 1968.
Who's that wearing Hurray For Leather? That's no brunette! And I doubt she oxidized five minutes out of the factory. There's also a tiny picture of her sitting in the
World of Barbie Family House on the second to last page of the 1969 booklet.
Dinner Dazzle Gift Set (1968) Sears - A side ponytail talking Barbie with a pink ruffled blouse with pink tinted gold brocadelike jacket, matching skirt, pantyhose, and pink closed toe shoes.
There is also a color variation of this which is harder to find where the jacket and skirt are blue-tinted.
PJ Swingin' in Silver Set (1970) Penney's - A TNT PJ with a silver lame' jacket with fake fur trim, a pink satin dress with pink bow accent with silver lame' bottom,
and matching silver lame' boots with fake white fur trim.
Silver N' Satin Set (1968) Penney's - This set featured a neck curls Talking Barbie, side glancing, with a
silver lame' dress with a silver and pink bottom made out of a similar design as the dress to Goldswinger. Also included was
a pink satin coat and a silver belt, which was at least a full inch longer than the one included in the Finishing Touches pak. Also, there was a pink half slip with a bow, this is also more common than the dress and coat because it was available separately in a pak.
Stacey Stripes Are Happening Set (1968) Sears - A long haired TNT Stacey was featured in this set with an outift which
was composed of a pink vest with three gold ring closure, a striped long sleeved undershirt, a striped skirt, two striped socks, and low pink boots.
Bright and Breezy Skipper Set (1969) Sears - A sausage curl haired TNT Skipper with a green and ble leatherlike coat with blue with green rak rak trimmed culotte outfit. Also included were blue shoes.
Travel In Style Set (1967) Sears - Standard side glancing Barbie with a blue and green floral print coat with green vinyl trim, a blue and green dress, a green hatbox with decal (this was in a pak so it is relatively common), and blue shoes.
Skipper Perfectly Pretty Set (1969) Sears - this set included a straight haired TNT Skipper with a blue velvet coat with high waisted blue plastic belt,
a white and blue dress, and blue shoes.
Chris Funtimers Gift Set (1967) Sears - Tutti's friend Chris with nine mix and match silver and pink articles of clothing.

Francie and her Swingin' Separates (1966) Sears - a long straight haired bendable leg Francie with two outfits: a top made out of the same material as the dress to Floating Gardens and a red skirt; and a yellow mini top with blue ruffle and blue bell bottoms.
Francie Rise and Shine Set (1971) Sears - Growin' Pretty Hair Francie with a nightgown and matching pale pink sheer coverup, some nighttime accessories.
Talking Julia Gift Set (1969) Sears - The first issue Talking Julia, usually with red oxidized hair, and a blue jacket with gold trim and matching dress and shoes.
Perfectly Plaid Gift Set (1971) Sears - this came with the neck curls Talking Barbie. Included is a red and white plaid jacket and pantsuit, purse, white fluffy hat,
and red closed toe shoes.
Mad About Plaid Gift Set (1970) Sears - a neck curls Talking Barbie with a predominantly red plaid dress with green vinyl belt, red plaid coat with ONLY TWO green buttons (the one with three is a Sears fashion bouquet pak),
a matching purse, a red fluffy hat, and red closed toe shoes.
PJ Fashion N' Motion Set (1971) Sears - a Live Action PJ with a red floral print fringed midriff baring top, matching pants and skirt, and
orange boots with scalloping on the top. It is important to note that this outfit is not tagged. Also included was a record, "Hey Little P.J. Girl."
Fluff Sunshine Special Set (1971) Sears - Living Fluff with a white shirt,a yellow vest, and red bell bottoms with
red, yellow, and blue rik rak trim, a yellow skateboard, and a floral print skirt.
Ken Red White and Wild Set (1969) Sears - bendable leg Ken with a red, white and blue striped jacket, pants, a shirt, shoes and a tie.

TYPE FIVE: EXCLUSIVE DOLLS WITH EXCLUSIVE OUTFITS AND/OR ACCESSORIES
In these sets, the dolls, outfits and boxes are all rare.
Skipper Very Best Velvet Set (1970) Sears - This set included a Living Skipper made in Japan instead of Taiwan. Her face paint is more pastel hued, and her hair is shorter, curlier,
and lemon blonde instead of honey blonde. Her outfit is an orange velvet coat with plastic belt, orange velvet dress with light blue accent bow and yellow lining, yellow sheer pantyhose, and orange shoes.
Living Barbie Action Accents Set (1970) Sears - this contained a redhead Living Barbie made in Japan instead of Taiwan. Most of these had side glancing eyes, but a rare few had straight ahead eyes.
This set included many action clothing pieces and accessories, most of which were magenta in color.
Jamie Furry Friends Gift Set (1970) Sears - this set featured Walking Jamie in her original outfit with and orange
plush coat and hat (the hat is the same one that came with Made For Each Other). Also included were a gray dog similar to the Dog and Duds dog, a pink leash, a yellow bowl with food, and a few other accessories.
Jamie Strollin' In Style Set (1971) Sears - another Walking Jamie set, this one featured a blue with yellow trim blouse with belt and matching pants, a white dog, and a yellow ball.
