As a child, I was always fascinated with Barbie, her wardrobe and hairstyles. Of course little boys weren't supposed to play with Barbie dolls.
But my fascination with fashions persisted and found a home designing and making costumes, makeup and hairstyles for college and community theatre productions.
About a year ago a friend asked if I had ever considered sewing for Barbie and proceeded to show me some of the doll artists featured in Barbie Bazaar and Millers. I was in awe of these great couturiers of miniature fashion and had to find out if I could create my own fashions, makeovers and hairstyles.
Now I am a member of The Diamond Doll Club of Arkansas here in Little Rock and making up for all those years that I wasn't allowed to play with Barbies. I have a growing collection of modern barbies and now I've even been bitten by the vintage bug and have purchased my first vintage doll and fashions.
Being an artist I don't have any favorite color; I like them all! As for styles I am partial to evening wear especially with lots of beads and glitz. But now the theatre costumer background has really got me interested in creating retro looks. My favorite head molds to work with are Mackie, the Barbie Repro, Steffie and Shani.
I don't take orders for my creations, most are one-of-a-kinds, nor do I sell them over the internet. It is my hobby and if I turned it into a business, I'm afraid it would not be as fun. If you come to the Annual Doll & Toy Show and Sale of The Diamond Doll Club of Arkansas, in May here in Little Rock, you may find some of my creations for sale.
